Traffic in Naunton Village

Information about traffic in Naunton

The Parish Council is aware of the ongoing issue of drivers speeding in the village and has installed ’20’s Plenty’ signs on several lampposts.

A formal  20 mph restriction in the village would first need to be approved by Gloucestershire County Council Highways department.  GCC Highways tends to favour lower speed limits only where serious incidents have taken place.  If GCC approved, they would then need to request permission from Parliament to change the standard speed limit in a built up area.  The cost of this process is generally between £15 and 20,000 and would have to be funded by the village i.e. the PC.

The PC has also considered the use of Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) in the village.  These would also have to be approved by GCc Highways, who also install the posts in approved locations.   The cost depends on the number of units and starts around £4500 for one unit. VAS equipment is not supported by the police so no action can be taken, but motorists do often respond and bring their speed down to the limit at that location.

Other approaches include having local residents trained to operate speed measurement devices.   A document explaining all the options is produced by GRCC and can be found on their website:  https://www.grcc.org.uk/cars-community-approaches-to-road-safety-toolkit.
